Vespers – a poem by M.J. Iuppa

Thunder over Ontario
echoes so deep that

no one hears rain, or
the silence before rain

dimples the lake that
mirrors a dark sky . . .

Standing there, on
the lip of sand, looking

up, or is it down—rain
fills the cup of my hands.

M.J. Iuppa’s fourth poetry collection is This Thirst (Kelsay Books, 2017). For the past 31 years, she has lived on a small farm near the shores of Lake Ontario. Check out her blog: for her musings on writing, sustainability & life’s stew.
