The Butterfly Doesn’t Understand – a poem by Marso

The Butterfly Doesn’t Understand

The butterfly doesn’t understand
the need for nectar,
the ability to fly,
the wing,
the wavelengths of light,
flowers in colors
that signal this is for you.

The flower doesn’t understand
its own colors or scent,
why the butterfly lands,
or from where the rain falls

and yet,
even without understanding,
like a migratory flight
through the unknown,
there’s a meeting
of surrendering grace,

where each one remains itself
in service to the whole.

It surpasses understanding,
while instilling
a kind of knowing

like the flower
distilling
rainfall
into nectar.

Marso writes poetry shaped by years of living within different cultures and by a practice of close attention to ordinary life.
