Mating Goldfinches – a poem by Mari Maxwell

Mating Goldfinches

They drift and float over
power lines then freefall
across the stream bed where
lemon gorse and whitethorn beam.
Their bellies flash in
each churn of wing
a duet in the blue sky.
Each lift, fall and spin
synchronised -
Love's golden measure.
