in his mother’s womb – a poem by Mara Fein

in his mother’s womb

he is as in a field
early in the evening,
as Isaac awaits his
beloved, his soul mate;
naked and immortal
as Michelangelo’s Adam,
right hand reaching out
for God’s touch;
passive and patient,
fingers bent,
lacking strength
to straighten them,
anxious for life to begin.

Mara Fein‘s poetry has most recently appeared in Poetry Quarterly.  Other work has appeared in Jonah Magazine, Poor Yorick, Tahoma Literary Review, and Wilderness House Review.  She holds a PhD in English from the University of Southern California.
